ARTIST STATEMENT: My paintings describe personal and cultural excavations. My influences are many- cosmic events, personal narratives, youtube anthropology, tokens from indulgent ancestors, haunted childhood nature walks, nouveau deities, topographical maps of the subconscious (it’s always good to be aware of the elevation), and multi-appendaged animal friends. I am making these paintings with the spirit of an precocious child working on a connect-the-dots puzzle designed by an alien. My process involves the use of fabrics that were hand-made by strangers and fabrics that I have batiked myself, as well as paint and pastels. The paint, fabric, and drawing materials are applied to the surface quickly and instinctively, invoking a kind of “automatic-drawing” surrealist approach. Although, this is not always the case- sometimes I hover laboriously over a mark, working and reworking it like a dough that needs to be kneaded. The use of paint is atmospheric and gloppy. The mark-making is bold, staccato, expressive and friendly. The symbolism is cryptic, sexual, totemic and childish. Conceptually and emotionally, the use of fabric made by others lends the work an energetic element that I could not create alone. The layers of paint and fabric insinuate a process of change, death and resurrection. These are the major themes of my work; What is to be found when digging in the mud of the subconscious mind? What symbols are knocking around in the pelvic region of our culture? As I continue this excavation, will I find something that is largely personal, hugely universal, or both?
