ARTIST STATEMENT: While not really being a fan of where it has taken us, Frank Stella has posited an idea of intense interest to me. What would happen should painters reintroduce the third dimension into painting, while not making sculpture or some sort of hybrid instead? It would necessarily entail going back, looking at the old and placing it at the service of the new. Ideas of perspective geometry solidified the way in which human beings view the world. This can certainly be done again with the effort to create new visions, not of invented or imagined worlds but actual ones. My work explores what this might look like, a formalism which rejects the stringent conditions of flatness in favor of a robust illusionism, and complexity in arrangement of form and color on the formal plane not the photographic one. Recently my work has entered a period of meditation upon Neo-Platonism, its influence cross culturally via Sufism and specifically the opposition between pure thought, in this case geometry, the natural world and its representation on the formal plane. My hope through this meditation is to locate a midpoint that I might personally hold that brings these concepts and image making systems into balance. A balance which not only emphasizes their similarities but re-establishes a link between pure thought and the concept that what is outside of 'I' is also 'I. My hope is that this will eliminate the concepts of nearness and farness and assist in my personal grappling with the concept of unity of being. Physically this work has thus far taken the form of painting and drawing. My aim is to convey this to the viewer in a way my use of words cannot.
