ARTIST STATEMENT: My practice investigates history, media, race, and homoeroticism. It springs from a longstanding commitment to defy oppression; however, social power dynamics resist reduction to binary thinking and simplistic narratives. Recent works on paper reference slavery, sexuality, and the male figure. Rather than literally interpret source photos I draw using experimental monotype and image transfer techniques. These result in distortion, exaggeration, and incompletion. I develop dense strata of collage, ink, pencil and acrylic color fields and washes. The layering of images and media suggests both accumulation and erasure of social history. By working within and transgressing traditional figuration, I want to critique modes of racial, sexual, and social identity while celebrating the human form.

Recent iPhone videos reference love relationships and power dynamics through comedic short shorts distributed through social media allowing me to reach a large and wide, diverse audience. I use tiny vintage dolls as puppets who play out parodies and stories of love, betrayal, blackmail, domination and rejection. My works on paper or real street scenes serve as video backdrops.
