Shane P Morrissey
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Bushwick

ARTIST STATEMENT: In my sculpture practice, I create fragments of remembered scenes. Relying on hindsight, I process my own experiences though layers of memory interpreted and abstracted into sculptures and installations. I work with unlikely materials to create geometric configurations, multi-faceted exaggerations and implied absences that convey impressions of past events.
By using materials that aren’t true to what is portrayed I’m able to add visual layers of interpretation through my hindsight. The materials have their own conventions that I subvert and use in unlikely ways. There is a push and pull between what is being communicated through the recognizable appearance and what is concealed in the layers of material. I use a variety of methods to interrupt the craftsmanship associated with materials I use, such as wood. By bending, shaping and fragmenting wooden structures I create scaffolding for my sculptures that tenuously holds each element together in a permanent state of derelict vulnerability.
I make my art as a way to relate my own experiences to certain objects. I think of the resulting sculptures as intimate monuments. They are rough, hunky and precarious, expressing the quirky calamities of my past in relation to new incidents that occur while working. The objects don’t just represent themselves; they are marks of absence to be acknowledged.
