Jessica Bottalico
BROOKLYN, NY

ARTIST STATEMENT: My paintings focus on the visceral nature of spaces, the things we keep, and the stories they hold. The patterns and the objects I depict come from my personal domestic space. They are my curtains, my rugs, my dish towels, my plants and my vases. Each painting is an investigation of a tightly framed space. The close-up compositions and enlarged scale of the plants, flowers and patterns directly relate to an analogy of the figure, forcing the living objects to act as a stand-in for the real occupant of this space. The plants periodically fade away, camouflaged and absorbed into the world behind them, mimicking a reality based on time. In addition to disorienting the viewer, the distorted figure ground relationship explores the nature of the space and the objects’ dependency upon each other. When the paintings are viewed together, a narrative forms. The paintings solely composed of patterns become about more than just color and shape, void of the life in their companion paintings, they call to mind absence. My paintings are gloomy, eery, claustrophobic, vacant, vibrant and lively. These are my many internal spaces.
