ARTIST STATEMENT: My current body of work is entitled, A Womb of My Own (Mistakes Were Made in Development). I am combining analog photographic processes with performance and craft to create work that heavily emphasizes self-care through artistic process. The works in this series include photograms, cyanotypes, crocheted pillows, crocheted blankets, performance and sound installations. At the heart of my work is a need to imbue an element of self-care in the process of making each piece. I have purposefully chosen methods that require time, but also involve steps that are comforting to me. Included in my profile portfolio are my self-portrait photograms. Each piece is created to cope with periods of intense stress. I make these pieces in my living room or bedroom in complete darkness. I set up my paper in a grid, and then I lay down, creating a photosensitive surface for meditation, anger, rest, etc. When I am ready, I trigger my flash once. Each photogram is developed in the darkroom to complete the image, and this time serves as another quiet space of enjoyment in the process. The only image in this series with a distinct title is called “Charleston”. I made this photogram in response to the June 17th massacre of a prayer group at the historic Mother Emmanuel A.M.E. Church. I found myself, along with many of my Black friends/family, having a hard time finding relief in the wake of almost constant racial terrorism in 2015. Thousands of miles away, our trauma is collective, global, present and rooted in history. I made this piece with an utterly broken heart, encased in rage, and wanting to embrace the entire African Diaspora.
