ARTIST STATEMENT: My current work explores abstraction with flesh: dense intimate compositions of saturated color play against the muted life tones of ourselves and our environments. I’m interested in life butting against abstraction, the energy and emotional charge of intense colors in relationship with the temporal conditions of the body.
Flesh calls to mind life and its inevitable mortality. Informed by chronic pain, recovery, and loss, my relationship to the body wavers from a caring old friend to acute betrayal.
The necessity of finding acceptance of a duality that is both unnerving and inescapable is the meat of this process; the body is at once resilient and vulnerable, a liability and an asset.
