Linda Kamille Schmidt
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Bushwick

ARTIST STATEMENT: Linda Kamille Schmidt creates fabric installations with layers of colorful transparent panels. Her work recalls celebrations, marches, banners and fairs, while simultaneously functioning as an incubator for thought and contemplation. It is inspired by makers and by sewing and design skills that have been passed down from generations of women who were quilters and seamstresses. Schmidt’s Mennonite heritage and upbringing is integral to the work but her hope is that others will recognize pieces of their own culture and experiences in the universal elements of the work.

When building this work, Schmidt pieces together fabrics that are a combination of random thrift store finds and bargain bin remnants as well as expensive high quality silks. The layered fabric panels interact with each other and capture ambient light and air. The result is a geometric structure that facilitates beautiful color mixtures, lighting transitions and gentle movement. There is a gestural and ephemeral quality as many of the edges are unfinished and frayed.

Recently, Schmidt has created outdoor pieces with weatherproof fabrics that interact with the landscape. The view changes when seen through the colorful blocks of vinyl and other transparent materials. The weather often causes ripping and fraying in areas that have been constructed with fragile materials, again emphasizing an ephemeral quality in the work.
