ARTIST STATEMENT: Â I create art because doing soÂ makes me feelÂ fulfilled andÂ
at peace. I feel most like myself whileÂ creating, aspiring to
connect to people through myÂ art. I especially enjoy creating
work that juxtaposesÂ the materials used to create the piece
against ideasÂ or values conveyed, and something which is
Â Â Â Fascinated by the beauty of layering texture, patterns, and color, different mediums inspire me. When various mediums come together in my work, they compliment and enhance each other. I feel free knowing that if something doesn't work in a piece, I can change it. I begin work with a generalized idea, and often find the painting develops in its own somewhat unplanned direction. One idea leads to another.
Â Â When someone views my work, I want them to connect to it as an artifact which speaks to them on various levels.
Â Â In my current work, I challenge the idea that animals fit into a class system, and I explore and then portray animals with humanistic attributes. I ask, "What could be done in the work to elevate their status? Why do we think of animals in this way? Which animals get preferred treatment? What story could be told through the images? My motivation is to provoke the viewer to analyze these questions and explore the possible answers.
