Neighborhood: Fort Greene

ARTIST STATEMENT: In my work repetition implies movement and the passage of time to highlight the radical stillness of paintings. Repeating a figure allows me to sketch out the full nuance of her characteristics in the sum of many. I see the figures as representations or aspects of myself and use painting to make transparent the fallacy of proliferated images as well as to simultaneously benefit from the power gained in repeating my image and those who identify as women. I make paintings atop paintings, disregarding the content below and treating each layer as a "blank slate" while being conscious not to cover each layer completely. Over time, this incidental overlapping of paintings is what creates the composition. The lack of figure-ground integration locates the work outside of a pictorial space and disallows purely narrative interpretations. What is created is an idea space; the figures are meant to be considered through the lens of the methods of their making. Or, I might begin a painting by using a formal logic to compose something entirely abstract and then use shapes or lines in the painting as guides to define the nature and location of figures or recognizable objects. This juxtaposition of modernist principles and the discordant insertion of repeated, cartoonish figures allows the work to oscillate between polarities of irony and sincerity, naivety and knowingness, and relativism and truth.
