ARTIST STATEMENT: I never became an artist – I was born into it. I began painting when I was a child, and I never stopped. My subjects are based on travels I have done, nature, nudes, and portraits. Scenic and mythological qualities of places such as shorelines, dense forests, and canyons, fields of wild flowers, castles, cathedrals, and ruins have always been a source of inspiration and ideas for me. I enjoy the moment of a place, absorbing the past – or present – where there is great beauty and color, where nature and architecture may exist in harmony and the imagination can run free. Nature has always been a source of peace, and spiritual sanctuary for me. It has fed my soul and creative energy for as long as I can remember. The nude figure is also a classical subject and one I am exploring in more abstract/surreal ways. The idea of a figure in space or flying/ falling, or being absorbed into color is what fascinates me. I love to paint portraits, but often feel as if they are “Faces” rather than “Portraits” as the sitters only posed for the photographs from which I work. For me the painting must convey my feelings about them. If people receive pleasure from viewing my work then I am glad. If it sends them someplace special in their memories or imagination then I feel success. I work mostly from my own photographs, and I paint in oil on canvas or gouache, watercolor pencils and pencil on paper.
