ARTIST STATEMENT: Nature Is As Nature Does: Drawing Containment/Aleatory Actions
“Ideas are one thing and what happens is another.” - John Cage
My work often refers to things spilling with or without intention. I conceive of my studio as a laboratory in which I explore uncontrollable situations. These explorations can trigger ideas resulting from balancing chance with a seemingly controlled setting. My drawings play with aleatory actions: fluctuating between control and abandon. While I spill, pour, inject, and tip, I also create situations in which my input is limited and conditions may unfold on their own.
The state of the current natural environment is of overwhelming concern. No other creature on earth has the destructive impact on the planet than do human beings. Events occurring worldwide show humanity’s struggle to manage its presence. The major oil spill in Greenpoint, Brooklyn seeped through the ground and under houses and the incessant production of disposable plastic with no foresight created a massive chowder of plastic debris suspended in the Pacific Ocean that can be seen from outer space. The natural world is continually attempting to repair itself through innate means. The dispersal of plant seeds and pollen that propagate the planet and the beauty of a never repeating waterfall are examples of randomly occurring natural processes with restorative effects.
My work evokes these references through the containment of liquefied gouache with various forms of damming in which seepage inevitably ensues. I choose clean and clear primary and tertiary colors as a starting point allowing arbitrary mixing to cause, as it were, contamination. This work is the culmination of having more than a decade’s relationship with these materials and processes.
