ARTIST STATEMENT: I have always been fascinated by the idea of perception, especially how perception differs from person to person. In my current artwork, I am exploring synaesthesia, a neurological condition in which a stimulus causes a reaction in two or more senses simultaneously. Based on this blending of the senses, I attempt to translate sound and music into color and form. Through painting, drawing and animation, I look to create visual music. I approach my work through a series of conceptual explorations. Each approach explores a different aspect of music: frequency of sound, musical notation, the action of musical performance, the temporal and ephemeral nature of music and sound, and “visualizations” that explore the imagery and structure of sound and musical composition. Each of these approaches follows a specific set of parameters. In my sound/color paintings, I set a translation key based on the frequencies of sound and light waves, and I use it to “translate” musical notes into color. In my drawings, I explore western and non- western musical notation systems and create some of my own. In my explorations of musical performance, I record the movements and actions that produce music in paint; the trace of the touch of my hands on the piano keys, the gestured movements of the conductor’s baton in space. Using animation, I express timing, tempo and rhythm. Lastly, my visualizations are the most synaesthetic in nature. They attempt to capture the imagery inherent in a piece of music or sound. They are based on what I feel and experience when I listen to music.
