Pablo Carpio
Brooklyn, NY

ARTIST STATEMENT: Using paint’s materiality as a starting point, I research the poetics embedded in the construction of the painting process. I set aside the virtual nature of two-dimensional canvases in order to build paintings that search for their own singularity as part of a three-dimensional, bodily reality. My investigations represent a reaction to the assumed certainty of conventional modes of understanding painting as a unidirectional discipline, and instead focus on structural explorations of the medium towards an undefined state. I remain alert while looking, I learn through experimentation and I move forward leaning on intuition: The error sometimes takes me to encounter the unexpected, which then becomes an operative space. Moving around the margins of painting, pushing the physicality of it, my work facilitates an indirect conversation with sculpture and installation. The resulting creations reveal a sense of freedom and amusing improvisation in the way I make, and combines an intense physical interaction with a subtle and yet strong emotional presence. These works manifest an interest in the relation between traditional and new forms. Suggesting a dialogue that links to movement and transformation, they act as a metaphor of the constant and rapid metamorphosis of the world.
