ARTIST STATEMENT: Art is the soundtrack of my life. A compilation of illustration, collage, textures, and layers of acrylic paint serve as an abstract and realistic meeting place of my greatest passions: art, music, and community. With each piece I am able to tell the story of my own journey, as well as the world around me. I am a freelance illustrator, graphic designer, and author hailing from Brooklyn, New York. I am greatly influenced by a strong passion for music and the rich, diverse history of black culture. My works often record the evolution of the African-American experience. Through depiction of historical events, traditions, and leading figures, I am able to shed light on the strong impact of the African diaspora on modernity. In my work, I look for the humanity within each piece. I compare my art to music, viewing each piece as a song within a grand album. Each song is what I see after observing and listening to the world. One can spend months, even years, pressing play, pause, and rewind recording life's experiences into art. I find inspiration in my location, observation of people, attention to social issues, and conversations. I have always been inspired by the universal connection we all share with music and hope that my art fosters a relationship in the same key. There is a lyric, melody, or composition that links to each piece and I believe that I have a responsibility to share my perspective and artistic voice. If I create a painting that can not only be seen, but heard, I have succeeded in reaching a personal accomplishment. Most of the artwork I produce is created live; a niche that I have discovered to be an exciting enhancement to my lifetime of training. I am able to grant access into my world of ideas, challenges, solutions, accomplishments, and growth. As a young artist, I was frustrated that visual arts never received the same platform as other art disciplines. No different than music, dance, or theatre, I believe visual arts should be a shared experience. Performing in front of an audience allows an onlooker to interact and witness the progression from blank canvas to completed composition. This encounter solidifies a connection to the work produced and deepens one's appreciation for the creative process of the visual artist.
