ARTIST STATEMENT: I was born in a family of Greek Refugees in Poland. I became involved in photography while studying at a university in my hometown. My body of work spans a variety of subjects, yet it continuously follows a self-exploratory and expressive trail guided by my own investigations. I use photography - sometimes as a beginning and sometimes as a conclusion – to create my own interpretation of artist books. The books result in building a visual, as well as sculptural form of a library. Noncompliance with written word was manifested in my decision to paint white every page of every book I collected over the years. Since the books turn white only to be filled again with new photographs, this Olympian gesture aimed to achieve a state of TABULA RASA, proves to be both utopic and unattainable. My attempt to reverse the Time Arrow, an attempt to see the past in the future, an experience influenced by Eric Sanderson’s book MANNAHATTA, and my New York years bear fruit to MANHATTAN TO MANNAHATTA books filled with energy of the canyons of evolving City. The plastic back-skin of the photographs is peeled off and the pages are taped into books. The work continues with number of books growing every day.
