ARTIST STATEMENT: In my practice as an artist I ‘rescue’ stories or memories as at- tached to objects, which can include fragments of discarded paint- ings and other used fabrics and make them into new entities. My current body of work -small collages in which I combine textile fragments with vintage photographs- can be seen as a comment on our tendency to stereotype groups of people both in the smaller context of our daily lives and the larger political one. By eliminating the individual faces in the photographs by adding colored beads or small pieces of painted canvas, I abstract this tendency ad absurdum, creating smaller or bigger groups of ‘Other People’ that can only be identified by their characteristic of, say, having a blue bead or a canvas triangle for a head. I hope to draw in the viewer into these pieces and once drawn in create a small jolt to help reconsider thinking of ‘Other People’ in ‘Us vs Them’ generalizations. The ‘Memory’ or ‘Memorial’ Chair series started with a visit to a fetish shrine in Ghana, where I encountered five little chairs in a row. Chairs in some cultures can be imbued with the same spiri- tual significance as other sculptural objects. Originally a painter, past work as a (theater) costume designer has crept into my art practice. I use sewing as an alternative to drawing.
