Neighborhood: Sunset Park

ARTIST STATEMENT: In my work, I confront misconceptions related to the discreteness and autonomy of objects. This idea pervades every aspect of our culture, even our perceptions of the body. Through closely examining natural and man made infrastructures it becomes abundantly clear that such an autonomy does not exist, and everything is interconnected in a vast, complex ecosystem. Through a multidisciplinary practice that includes mixed media, assemblage, installation and performance, I imagine a space where everything exists simultaneously permeating, fragmenting and intertwining in relation to the other.

I work primarily with found objects and organic materials with the intent to test their physical limits and blur their boundaries. I often use extreme methods such as fire, a pickaxe or a sledgehammer to break down the object only to then reassemble it anew, fusing it with other materials in the process. Using annihilation and preservation as creative modes, I attempt to destabilize, invert and reconfigure binaries such as interior and exterior, back and front, body and environment.

Through my art, I suspend the idea that everything is discrete as a starting point for redefining the boundaries of objects and spaces in relation to each other. I aim to connect to the viewer through physical, psychological and spiritual encounters with the work rather than through recognizable imagery. By expanding our conceptualization of objects such as the body, I hope to reveal the underlying structures and overlaps between things and perhaps look toward the imperceptible.
