Anne Gilman
Brooklyn, NY

ARTIST STATEMENT: My work is a mixture of text and non-text drawing that ranges from large-scale installations and multi-panel projects to smaller more intimate works. There is a “figuring out” component to the drawings as I incorporate “mistakes” into the work and use them as a source of commentary. The writing has an essay-like approach where I write extemporaneously as part of my drawing process, with editing and legibility changing the "read" of the work. I often switch between English and Spanish, and I will pick specific words or phrases to translate, adding commentary on word-meanings as it relates to the specific project. This deciphering of an idea is mixed with textured and layered drawing that can include aggressive mark-making alongside labor intensive, repetitive marks. In the end, my work is a combination of analytical consideration of an idea and tactile interpretations through the materials I use. In this way, I see each new situation or set of problems as an opportunity and a starting point for the work.
