Brooklyn , NY
Neighborhood: Bedford-Stuyvesant

Media:Ink; Fabric; Painting;

ARTIST STATEMENT: My work is a product of my interests in color, negative space, line and repetitive geometric shapes. My artistic process includes laying down gesso and color wash, then dripping and manipulating ink down the canvas. Before I continue with an idea I usually reflect on it and then plan a color scheme for the piece; after that I use those colors in specific areas, making sure to leave negative forms for balance. I am attuned to the power of using bright complementary colors as well as earth tones. When I look at my work I see an extension of myself. In 2012 I experienced the passing of someone very close to me. It rattled me and I felt a complete loss of control. When I was able to heal I realized that my artwork was an area where I could have complete control and my work expanded. I used a patchwork technique to piece my work and myself back together. The process of finding this abstract approach came natural to me. I enjoyed the movement and fluidity of ink, Iíve learned to etch, drip and blow on ink to create various shapes. At times I chose for my work to be painted on loose canvas, because I felt stretchers were binding and didnít allow for movement. It was important to me that I could lift, turn and twist the canvas as needed. The geometric shapes are created by dripped ink which I manipulate by changing the position of the canvas. The colors are rich earth tones that provide comfort and are aesthetically pleasing, I am also conscious of balancing tones and dimensions. You can see that these bursts of color and shape are protected and confined. I wanted my work to reflect the joy, stability and structure I yearned for in myself. It was and continues to be a healing process. In the near future I hope to work with other materials such as glass that lend to the interplay of translucent light, color and strong lines.
