Joseph Bochynski
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Bushwick

ARTIST STATEMENT: Archeology, symbolism, and the exploration of power structures are three main themes in my work. I use archeology as a metaphor for the cycles of life, whether that be a changing neighborhood, the rise and fall of nation-states, or the extinction of species. Symbolism, especially mystic symbolism, is a powerful cultural force that, even in an age of secular technology, connects the spirit animals of the past to app icons of today. The language of symbols reveals the structures of power, its sources, and its abuses. This becomes especially clear when we are presented with anachronistic objects from the deep past/future.
