ARTIST STATEMENT: I am in love with paint as a substance, in its viscous, muddy form and its dry, flexible skin. I build with paint and with color; Each layer is an event of slow germination fused to the one before it, culminating into a self sustainable substance: a hide of seductive skin-like plastic.
To some extent I relinquish control of these pieces. Each one is a character, or an entity unto itself, laying claim to physical space. I build it, slash it, and to some degree let it fall where it may. The material determines its own shape according to gravity in each incarnation of display. Gravity takes its toll, warping and stretching the material over time. They have a life beyond what can immediately be controlled. Gravity, as a constant inescapable, earthly force, defines terrestrial existence. By forcing these imagined beings to be subjected to inexorable forces, I hope my pieces will evoke a sense of meeting a strange species of being: one that oscillates between corporeal body and representation thereof.
