Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Bushwick

ARTIST STATEMENT: I am transdisciplinary artist born in Mexico (based in New York from 1993) working primarily in socially engaged projects since 1992. My practice began in the studio where I created works on paper that addressed the environment-as a subject and a metaphor-of the inner self. These concerns pushed me outside of the studio to work directly with others and my environment. It was at this time that I began working in the Amazon Rainforest. I wanted to integrate into my practice communal work methodologies activated by an exchange of knowledge that benefits all parts and developed the core of my working methodology: reciprocity, which is the balanced exchange of knowledge as the foundation for sustainable collaborative art-centered projects. My work includes projects in the Amazon that repurpose traditional technology to produce hand-made paper and books with illustrated content guided by the shaman involving all genders and generations; collaborations with artisans and traditional stilt dancers from the West Indies, New York and Mexico that blend performance, procession, costuming, dance, craft, carnival and protest for artistic interventions; to a project that centers on activating restorative memory and dignity. For this transnational project I enlisted the collaboration of universities, government institutions, forensic anthropologists, social psychologists, scholars, activists, and artists and was successful in repatriating Julia Pastrana from Norway to Mexico for a dignified burial after 153 years of being exhibited (while she was alive and after her death in an embalmed state). Additional works related address feminism, objectification, human traffic, gender, indigenous rights and the body, through animation, artist books, works on paper, and performance. Currently my work seeks to further the expectations of socially-engaged art by moving across disciplines by involving unlikely collaborators (archives, scientists, activists, rock stars, burlesque performers, street dancers, theater companies, storytellers, artisans), developing works such as an evolving multidisciplinary performance with various performers, animation, a collection of zine publications with artist contributions, works on paper, photography and sculptural works that directly address issues of human rights and feminism by integrating critical voices from popular culture, burlesque, and performance to insert itself both inside and outside the art world. While my projects are socially engaged, they also integrate a strong studio practice for their execution. My challenge-and joy-is to activate collectively the shared objectives of the project and to materialize its ideals through art.

Socially Engaged Projects:

2005 The Repatriation of Julia Pastrana.
Day of the Dead. Concert in collaboration with Apparatjik, Concha Buika and Void. Bergen International Music Festival, Norway

2002 Moko Jumbies. Trinidad and Tobago, USA and Mexico. The work began with Dragon Keylemanjahro School of Arts and Culture in Trinidad and Tobago, and in 2007 the Brooklyn Jumbies joined the project. The project provides -free of charge- extracurricular activities to youth in low-income areas, as well as reviving the art and tradition of West African stilt dancing. My artistic interventions include thematic development and costuming for street performances created with volunteers and residents of the neighborhood. Through artistic interventions during special events, carnival competitions, workshops and outreach programs, the group reinforces social ideals such as healthy life choices and respect for cultural heritage. In 2009 the project expanded to Mexico to include Los Zancudos de Zaachila, a traditional stilt-dancing group from that honors the patron saints of Zaachila, Oaxaca.

2009 Art and Ethics. Quarterly discussion group initiated in collaboration with students of La Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado La Esmeralda, INBA. The discussions are open to the public. Participating NGO members: GreenPeace, Casa Africa, Isla Urbana, Amnesty International, TEDxDF, Casa del Migrante, Casa del Refugiado, Casa del Estudiante, International Artists for Saharawi.

2002 Papeles Lacandones. Mexico. Papermaking project with the Lacandon people of the Chiapas Lacandon forest. This papermaking project emphasizes the balance between conservation of culture and nature, following the pattern of The Rainforest Paper Project, Yanomami Owë Mamotima. The project is working to produce paper made from local fibers and recycle waste paper products. Involved in the project are Lacandon experts in natural pigment and fibers. In cooperation with Na Bolom, Centro Cultural, San Cristobal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico
Ongoing -2001 GRAS, Grande Riviere, Trinidad, West Indies. GRAS is a paper-making project taking place within the local school of Grande Riviere. The school has now adopted the paper-making project into their curricula, creating the possibility for children to develop their creative skills and be involved in art through recycling. The students have been invited to lead workshops in schools throughout Trinidad and have successfully taught and shared their papermaking knowledge with over 200 children and adults. The goal of the project is to become a self-sustaining producer of fine quality 100% natural fiber paper. This project provides the people of Grande Riviere an empowering alternative for generating a means of revenue without having to leave their village in search for a job in the city, where their quality of life would be greatly diminished.
Ongoing – 1992 Rainforest Paper Project, Yanomami Owë Mamotima. Estado de Amazonas, Venezuela. The Yanomami Paper Project is an ongoing initiative, working with the Yanomami community living in the Venezuelan Amazon Rainforest. This project was developed directly with the community, and holistically addresses several needs at once: the need for the Yanomami to document their own history, their need of an ecological method of recycling obsolete text books and other paper refuse, and the need to create a new means of revenue without disturbing their cultural and ecological environment. In 2000 the first book produced by this project received the award of Best Book of the Year from the Centro Nacional del Libro of Venezuela. This book is now part of collections both private and public, including the Cotsen Library Collection of Princeton University, the Gimbel Library of Parsons School of Design in New York, and the Spencer Collection of the New York Public Library. In 2002 the project received the Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Grant. In 2004, the project was guest of honor at the XI Feria Internacional del Libro, Caracas, Venezuela. The Rainforest Paper Project is a sponsored project of New York Foundation of the Arts, a 501(c)(3), tax-exempt organization.
