ARTIST STATEMENT: I am a self-taught paper artist living in Brooklyn, NY. I began cutting paper in the early 1990s after seeing some paper art as part of a museum exhibit in Manhattan.
After a thirty-year career as a public school teacher, I now create my abstract artworks in retirement. Each piece is cut from a single sheet of black or white paper with a basic X-ACTO knife. Beginning with a ‘full’ sheet of paper, I might sketch geometric forms or work spontaneously. Through the process of cutting, the sheets become porous with slits, spaces, and windows that create active optical dimensions.
My work has been shown at group shows at Brandeis University, Westmoreland Museum of American Art, the National Museum of the Guild of American Papercutters, and Highfield Hall and Gardens.
