ARTIST STATEMENT: I think of my art objects as incomplete shadows of purer versions of themselves. Each piece’s essence exists in a non-material and abstract space, which I try to feel out and crudely execute. Working in an additive manner using the humble materials surrounding me, I seek out a sort of Alien Primitivism, employing my subconscious, dreams, intuition, and learned sculptural tropes to create these hybrid forms. The idea of accessing the immaterial through the material is important to me. This Romantic approach is balanced with a dystopian and multi-faceted perspective concurrent with the culture in which I find myself. I’m interested in responding to the exponential speed at which information is shared today and in the pluralistic way in which we can process this information. Just as an idea becomes something different once it’s made flesh, a sculpture becomes diluted and changed as it’s re- appropriated into another medium like painting, video, or poetry. This change mirrors the deterioration and degeneration of language in this age of rapid information exchange. I’m in love with, and weirded-out by existence and aim for this tension to be present within the work.
