Neighborhood: Fort Greene

ARTIST STATEMENT: I am primarily a painter that uses oil paint in an expressive manner sometimes combined with photographic imagery on canvas. To create thought-provoking and narrative interpretations of historical and contemporary African American themes, issues and racial identity matters is my personal goal as an artist. The experience of growing up as a young artist amidst the crime ridden neighborhoods of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania helped me to realize that art should be a tool for learning and for teaching and to hopefully expose the hidden or otherwise under exposed truths about the world we live in. To demonstrate the injurious effects of visual representations and misrepresentations in society and how it effects people's perception of one another in terms of race, physical appearance or social status is the ultimate goal. Movies, television, news media, or the internet can be very influential when I create an image. Each painting starts off as an initial idea and then, in most cases, changes as it progresses. For most of the paintings, the computer plays an important role in the development process as far as color and or compositional arrangements of elements within the paintings. The images used for the collage comes from various sources such as African American historical books, newspapers, the internet, movie clips or my own drawings. The images for the collage are sometimes scanned into a computer and manipulated using digital art software.
