ARTIST STATEMENT: My paintings utilize both flat and patterned surfaces where unresolved flesh emerges, serving as a cautionary tale of becoming a victim of our own self-destructive impulses. Often, people psychologically balance on a precipice between rational and irrational states of mind. We are compelled to behave in ways that are not in our best self-interest. I examine this tension, as well as my own anxieties, shames, and fears.
My paintings begin with a pattern of lines and color as a foundation for visualizing the form on the surface. Through the rendering of the figure, I interrupt and transform the flat surface into an illusion of developing skin and bodies. The figures are purposely unresolved to allude to the incomplete yet evolving nature of our inner most selves.
