ARTIST STATEMENT: In 1995 I began a drawing series titled “ The Work Drawings.” The premise of the work was to create an ongoing body of drawings with no predefined subject matter, but pivoted around the fact that they were made during “down time” in the work place. It began while an assistant registrar at The University of Iowa Museum of Art. The series documents a brief stint temping in corporate New York and then moves through two years as a security guard and one and a half years as a library technician at the Metropolitan Museum. I continue the body of work during lunch and coffee breaks at my current job. The images are a medley of abstract, representational, and written text, with each job’s drawings reflecting characteristics of that position. The drawings have led to a body of work that includes paintings, photos, and small sculptural pieces.
