ARTIST STATEMENT: My work is about a sense of place. My aim in these paintings is to marry the internal landscape we carry in our bodies, with that of the earth. Working in charcoal and oil paint, on a human sized scale, my work expresses the juxtapositions inherent in landscape, or place, that are intensified by the density of city living. The pavement, buildings, subway, rooftops, bridges, doorways, and people all jammed in together with trees, expanses of sky and water find their way into the palette, the marks, the gestures, and the structure of my paintings. In the course of a day, I take in the sky, light, buildings, trees., a million discrete objects, patterns and textures, along with, people, faces, flesh carved out of darkness, and etched in light. In my mind these forms exist in a timeless confluence. My effort to make sense of this multitude of forms becomes a compositional hook that begins each painting as a horizontal line across some part of the canvas. What moves it along and resolves it is the dance between the original conception and the discoveries that come from the materials.
