ARTIST STATEMENT: I look for the unexpected. I start with no rules, experimenting as much as I can possibly do in a playful learning process. I trust my hands and think formally. I don’t plan and I don’t know in advance. I like to discover as I make. I start abstractly setting rules to boost my creativity and my awareness. Limitations push me to discover resources I could not even imagine. In the process, figures quickly appear and lead me all the way to social and political issues: a new series begins. I come from a conceptual background but through travels in the Middle East, discovered how things were made. By starting from the technique I found more interesting and surprising ways to think. I keep evidences of the process in the final work so the viewer can easily understand how the pieces are made. I work from any situation or context using all kind of materials. I am interested in art as a way of thinking and understanding the world around me, as a practitioner but also as a viewer. The finished works are opened to the viewer’s interpretation, and when they are successful, put their imagination in motion on multiple levels. When I am invited in a museum or an art center I work large and site specifically. I learn from the space, the geography, the history and the people I meet. Day after day I build, learn more and aim to give back. I enlighten dark spaces through the light and images of a single video projector. I play with architecture using a long and wide roll of felt that I cut freehand and hang in space. The studio is a laboratory where from painting, cutting and drawing I discover forms and ideas. Between the layers appear shapes that become stories which create subjects and situations waiting for viewers to interpret them.
