Jonathan E Allen
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Crown Heights

ARTIST STATEMENT: I work in painting, collage, video and performance, engaging the schizophrenia and intoxicating cacophony of postmodern capitalist culture. I am interested in exploring and testing the boundaries between images and received ideas. This often entails working with dissonant images and materials, and trying to reconcile them within the same picture or sequence of moving images. To me contradictions can and should co-exist in the same artwork: perspectival illusion vs. flattened perspective, high-key colors vs.muted neutrals, a photograph vs. a pixellated abstraction . My goal is to colorfully but critically repurpose notions of spectacle and mass mediation through my own pictorial language.
