ARTIST STATEMENT: I majored in Art History in college, with an interest in Netherlandish Arts and of course the Renaissance. Many classic portraits, found in my collection of de-accessioned art books, have been in the back of my mind since.
In May and June 2014 I had the privilege of being the Artist-in_Residence a studio at the Leonard Covello Center in East Harlem. I brought those pictures with me to my studio. I started by taping a few portraits on the wall and drawing the faces on brown paper. They became my Muses as well as my subject matter. I spent a good amount of time in their presence and felt very fond and even possessive of them.
I used a xerox machine to copying the reproductions onto 100% cotton paper.
At first I cut and wove them with themselves, then I started combining them with other faces, crossing the centuries. The collages changed artist by artist and week by week. This portfolio is a cross-section of that work.”
