Kate Nielsen
BROOKLYN, NY
Neighborhood: Greenpoint

ARTIST STATEMENT: Kate Nielsen is a Brooklyn based artist, inspired by textures found in everyday life and outsider art. She holds a BFA in Illustration from the Rhode Island School of Design and studied Painting and Art History in France and Italy. Her process often involves building up layers of acrylic paint that are then peeled, cut, and reincorporated into a new form. She is interested in human nature, ritual, and memory and makes both narrative-based and abstract paintings. Her work often has to do with our collective urge to dominate the natural world and recognizing Nature as a feral presence. She enjoys collaboration and is always looking for opportunities to engage with her local community. A recent series of paintings or paint peelings contain a seemingly endless number of minuscule carved forms that have been said to look like God’s Eyes, resulting from the excavation of paint. They are meditations on the buildup of layers, harnessing complexity, and finding simplicity within chaos. In the final outcome of the paintings, the concentric layers of acrylic present a small-bore view of the passage of time. In addition to her paintings, she have been commissioned to paint murals around the New York area, and her collaboration with FPOAFM collective was featured in the Makers Biennial at the Museum of Art and Design. Her work as an illustrator has been recognized by the Society of Illustrators, 3x3 Magazine, and CMYK Magazine.
