Joanne Ungar
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Bushwick

ARTIST STATEMENT: These mixed media works are created through a process of layering discarded, disassembled, painted cardboard boxes with waxes. The mutations in color and opacity are somewhat unpredictable. I try to encourage accidental surprises—which are a welcome aspect of this work—while simultaneously struggling to maintain artistic control over the nearly-impossible-to-control medium of hot wax. Underpinning this work is my interest in consumerism and its side effect, packaging. The physical and ideological concept of packaging, with its many possibilities of interpretation leads me—and I hope the viewer—to think about waste, misleading facades and the pervasiveness of advertising in our culture.
