ARTIST STATEMENT: STATEMENT: DIANA HOSLEY BURCHFIELD Painting in watercolor in Northeast USA ( I used to live north of Boston ) particularly around Cape Ann, is almost a given. For some years I have continued Plein Air painting in Battery Park, New York, which includes encountering heat and rain, bugs, quick changing light, and racing against time. Painting on site in watercolor, technically demanding, requires a compilation and an interpretation of views. There is not adequate time for small details. It is necessary to simplify and understand when to halt. You will not be able to take anything back. Watercolor is suitable for spontaneity because of its ever fluid behavior. One artist said, “ It is the velocity of the weather pattern versus the speed of the brushstroke.” An important quote from the French artist Braque is: “ To work from nature is to improvise.” So true. Another artist’s quote, “ Watercolor allows the artist to choose a medium known for unpredictability and transparency, in which case material and concept work together to explore the possibilities.” Commitment to Fine Art has been my main direction. However, employment for many years as a Textile Print Designer eventually required knowledge of complicated computer programs. Sometimes, I have utilized those same cad tools for reconfiguring drawings and other artworks as an experiment and a foray into new layout ideas.
