ARTIST STATEMENT: Ecocide – “destruction of the natural environment, especially when willfully done”
The driving force in the creation of “Ecocide” is the interplay between traditional oil painting techniques and collage. This series addresses how our society is disconnected from nature, and how we have evolved in a way that has put us in a position where our way of life is at odds with the planet.
I choose to depict our man-made waste in mixed media and collage, creating a great deal of texture, which contrasts with the natural landscape that I have painted in oil. I used actual garbage and waste, such as plastic bags, since I believe that we can learn so much about a society from its garbage. Much of the recognizable collage imagery was taken from Time and Life magazines from the 1960’s, because this was a time period when industrialization and suburban consumer culture were particularly romanticized.
I am interested in the conflict between economic progress and environmental preservation, and present this work as a way of raising the question of whether this conflict can be resolved.
