Roxi Marsen
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Dumbo

Media:Assemblage;

ARTIST STATEMENT: I’ve always been a beachcomber, scanning the shoreline for washed up treasures. My new work evolved after revisiting Provincetown. Collecting natural materials reawakened a passion to work with found materials. When I returned to my urban life in Brooklyn, I began scanning my environment in a new way. Basements of aging hardware, second hand shops, cast offs left on stoops for repurposing, street debris supply me with the materials and inspiration to create these metal assemblages. Working in this way provides me with a kinship to outsider art.

ARTIST RESUME:

When asked what she does in her studio in the Vinegar Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn, Roxi Marsen replies, “I make things.” After many years of painting, her work has shifted to assembling metal in the realm of sculpture. Scavenging for metal debris as a beachcomber does on the seashore, her urban environment provides an endless supply of materials to be repurposed. Influenced by outsider art, Joseph Cornell, Paul Klee and Richard Serra, this intuitive approach to construction is playful and serious.

Her academic studies include an MFA from Pratt Institute and a BA from TCNJ. She has received fellowships from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown and MacDowell Colony. Numerous professional credentials include solo and group exhibitions in and around NYC.
