ARTIST STATEMENT: Our identities are personal narratives influenced by the experiences and interactions with our evolving environments. Growing up in a rural setting clearly separated and slowed allowing me to observe nature and the duality that is inherent. Since, I have spent an equal amount of time living in urban settings and the differences and similarities between each environment have informed my work. The resulting work is inspired from culturally significant tile mosaics, contemporary fashion design, and the attributes of the urban and rural places I have lived. These explorations and my continued interest in the symbiotic relationships between these seemingly separate environments inform my personal narrative. Living in New York City offers a wealth of source material. The continuous scrawls of text/imagery that blanket the city’s veneer influence the surface treatment of much of my new work. As each new message is created the newest dialogue dilutes an older one. The surfaces of the pieces are approached intentional and direct much like the city’s surface.
