Elisa Bertaglia
New York, NY
Neighborhood: Greenpoint

ARTIST STATEMENT: Elisa Bertaglia’s artistic research, displayed into big and small paintings and drawings on paper, is mostly focused on the main theme that speaks about the strong passage from childhood into the adult age. Based on a oneiric and symbolic language, the artist portrays young children, swimming-dressed, fully immersed into imaginary landscapes. According to the influence of some important Classics (such as “Le Metamorfosi” by Ovid, “De Rerum Natura” by Lucrethius, “Leaves of Grass” by Walt Whitman, and finally with the Italian novel “Meccanica Celeste” by Maggiani) the atmosphere of the paintings is deeply lyric and illusory and the composition is made by both abstract and realistic elements. These young children, diving into the empty space, floating into fields of leaves, or simply standing on the edge of unreal rocks, recall a new contemporary ritual, a kind of new mythology, the whole set of the social rules that a child needs for growing up and becoming adult in the contemporary society. Animals, such as herons, vipers, bluebirds, dogs and ravens, are in some ways an alter ego, a presence that alludes to the most instinctive and primitive part of our personality. Wolfs, especially, represent protective figures: these silent presences have the function to take care of the child and of his/her passage from an age to another, in the same way that a mother-wolf protects her cubs holding them with her mouth. The world of unconsciousness, duality and memory is represented both in big or small dimensions, through paintings based on diaphanous transparent glazes or a richer palette. The artist’s purpose is to pursue this kind of research developing more enigmatic and contemporary atmospheres, related to the enigmatic universality of this special moment.
