ARTIST STATEMENT: My art focuses on organic forms in abstraction. I explore movement, the play of light and dark, and what is seen within. Nature is often my inspiration, as well as flowing clothes, trash on the street and faces. I freely combine and reimagine elements, letting my subconscious take over, allowing the material to evolve – to be an expression of the moment, not to duplicate anything specific. I think of my art as an encounter, and invite viewers to question what they see. What do they see within the piece, and how do they relate to it? Does their perception depend on their frame of mind? From an early age I would see images within forms, my mind creating features stretching to escape the confines of a curtain or bedsheet. Sometimes haunting, sometimes comforting, these images remain and influence my work. My most recent work includes ceramic sculptures constructed using hand building techniques. By adding and subtracting as I work, I allow the clay to tell a story – expressing the effects of our environment, both natural and manmade. How are we and our surroundings eroded or compromised by recent events? And how do we break free and reimagine?
