Judith Ornstein
Brooklyn, NY
Neighborhood: Red Hook

ARTIST STATEMENT: STATEMENT I am an abstract artist whose imagery melds poetic impulse with networks of line and form. Using organic forms and a bright color pallet I seek to distill blocks of emotion and complex experiences into the closely observed spacial fragments. Networks of marks morph into the swells, inlets and an index of moves, teeming with detail and familiar shapes. I weave a wide range of references including cartoons, molecules and biological forms. My drawings are stream of consciousness and their process takes a whole body approach as I delve into the details. Color works directly on our emotional core. My off-kiter color blocks are put together in a tangled space as a kind of improvisational universe. I create kaleidoscopic effects that evoke a vibrant interior realm and represents the reciprocity between space and mind. I freely use surprising and abrupt transitions. I want to make a compelling pictorial event that would be an amalgamation of my sympathies and influences. BIO Judith Ornstein was born in Newark, NJ and received her MFA from Yale School of Art in 1975. Her first show in was a 2 person show with Susan Rothenberg. That same year she had a one person show at Willard Gallery. Judith was on the cover of the Paris Review in Dec. of 1977. She is the recipient of 2 National Endowment of the Arts in 1983 and 1979, Tiffany Foundation Award, Creative Arts Public Service Award and a Ford Foundation Grant. She has had several solo exhibitions at Willard Gallery NYC and Vibeke Levy NYC and has been included in group shows at Baskerville & Watson, H.F. Manes Gallery, Antoinette Torrens Gallery, Amos Eno Gallery and more. Her work is represented in various museum and private collections including the Albright Knox Museum, Vassar College Museum and the Cooper Hewitt Museum. Her current work is informed by an emphasises on the counter balancing of contrasting elements. ARTS MAGAZINE, April 1983

IMAGES AND IDEAS, September 1983, Review of Cirrus Gallery Show

LOS ANGELES TIMES, June 24, 1983 By W. Wilson “(Her work) carries on in the psychotic accents of Neo-Expressionism, but their understanding of tense moment and nauseous color show mastery…”

ALL IN LINE, Syracuse University Publication, November 1980

D’ARS MAGAZINE, January 1980 (Italian Publication) By Jonathan Crary

CAPS CATALOG, 1979

GQ MAGAZINE, October 1978, BY H.H. Sloane

ARTFORUM, February 1978, BY Leo Rubenfine “Ornstein is so delighted by crayons and pencils - in short, by Picture-Making - that she cannot complete a series of isometric projections without succumbing to a devilish desire for polka-dots, dreamy scrawls, loopy S’s, giggles, whoops and sighs…her drawings would doubtless give birth to a computer considerably more whimsical than Stanley Kubric’s celebrated Hal.”

PARIS REVIEW, Winter 1977, COVER

ARTS MAGAZINE, December 1977 By Jonathan Crary “Judith Ornstein’s paintings describe the operation of thought not in an explicit demonstration but in an oblique, even veiled disclosure of the process”

VILLAGE VOICE, December 14, 1977, BY P. FRANK “There is a wealth of open linear - almost written - information in Ornstein’s oil crayon-on-mylar renditions. Thicker lines are intercut with thinner ones, the narrower lines seeming to recede and the thicker ones to advance, resulting in a counterpoint of several rhythmic patterns”
