ARTIST STATEMENT: In my work, I explore the way fleeting moments become signs and symbols of a life as lived. Through collections, lists, counting, and images, I interrogate our relationship with our lives and deaths. Death is, of course, an extremely personal thing, but at another level, it is the most universal of human experiences. My work is oriented around these concepts, but I take materials seriously as research tools with conceptual weight. I am particularly interested in materials that generate discussions of temporality, failure, and the power of keepsakes. These have included mass-produced party balloons that I alter with hand-lettered text, online reviews laboriously reproduced through the traditional practice of hand embroidery, and found and repurposed used books with personalized gift inscriptions. Regardless of the materials or concepts I use, the most important part of my work is human interaction. I seek out people for lists and ideas, and I explore the remnants of interactions, using all of these to create artworks that represent life moments. These interactions are sources I use to try to tackle and understand how and when we hold onto moments, and how we mark them.
