ARTIST STATEMENT: Adopting and elaborating upon stylistic repertoires drawn from the history of figure painting, I strive to make formal and thematic parallels between art history and the iconography associated with various contemporary subcultures including their modes of dissemination such as pulp fiction, instagram and image shrines on personal websites. i am interested in how contemporary society unconsciously echoes specific manners of appearance that have been explored by historical movements or schools of fashion. Seen in this light, the resemblance between the big hair, huge belt buckels with bursting busoms in some of my series and the tresses of Pre-Raphaelite heroines is not fortuitous. Central to the work is the soursing of images from the web, vintage magazines, flea market photo bins and discarded books. In my paintings, sculptures, and works on paper framed in wall compilations, these sources function generatively as they are combined and recycled across my works. By showing aspects of popular culture anachronistically, i hope to expose the false hierarchy of high and low art and prompt us to consider the differences between the cultural industries and the art world. My subjects don't always have great universal appeal, but over time, people don't have to relate to subject matter. They relate to you creating a world that is somehow distinguishable to them. For example they may not be into images of female Pirates in suburban settings, but they can see that this artist is into it.
