ARTIST STATEMENT: Summer camp friendship bracelets and hand-crocheted chevron afghans were the gateway to my pattern obsession. I remember trips to the fabric store with my mother and countless hours spent staring at Magic Eye puzzles. Repetitive motion, repetitive imagery, repetitive colors; hypnotism at its finest. In order to work on my Paint-By-Numbers or dye Easter eggs, I had to sit at the kitchen table with newspaper spread out. Painting evokes personal memory and reflection. Like processing memories, my compositions are an idiosyncratic system. I utilize metallic pigments, copper, and aluminum surfaces to refract light and create movement on a two-dimensional surface. Geometric forms arise from architectural details I am drawn to in my surroundings. I recently started incorporating digital print into my pieces to expand upon my interest in hand vs. machine. In my work, pattern is the subject; I am not merely painting on objects in a decorative sense. I find comfort in structure.
