ARTIST STATEMENT: New Yorker by birth + Dominican by bloodline, Suhaly Bautista-Carolina, otherwise known as, “The Earth Warrior,” is an environmental activist, world traveler + visual storyteller. Her work + research in global sustainable development + environmental justice form the basis of her current exploration in the medium of photography. For her focus on the defense of the environment while studying at NYU, Suhaly was named one of “NYU’s 15 Most Influential Students" + earned her artist name, The Earth Warrior. The Earth Warrior has served as an educator, activist + artist throughout Latin America and the U.S. and is interested in the way humans interact with natural spaces. Her recent work explores themes of power, womynhood + existence.
The Earth Warrior is a Cru member of FOKUS (Fighting Obstacles Knowing Ultimate Success), an arts advocacy organization designed to educate, empower + unite communities through the arts. She has collaborated with Historic Green New Orleans and Culture of Creativity on projects related to creativity in the environment. Her photographic documents have been featured in FOKUS’ Insight Magazine. She has enjoyed solo exhibitions at Emperial Gallery, La Casa Azul Bookstore and TIPSY Art Gallery. The Earth Warrior is currently the Engagement & Education Manager at the public art nonprofit organization, Creative Time.
