ARTIST STATEMENT: Working primarily through performative photography, painting and sculpture, I celebrate and interrogate cultural perceptions via the unspoken language of the female form and the narrative potential found in innocuous materials—what I term the ‘Poetry of the Non-Human’. The sexiest smells in the world are the gasoline fumes in old garages and sandalwood—Motorcycles and Scheherazade are personal triggers to my primal sense of self and sensuality. My work is driven by the malleable nature of identity, eroticism and gender, and is realized through transitory performances- visual dialogues with transition and self modification mediated by both natural and man-made forces. The final documentation celebrates, and interrogates the narrative potential buried in everyday encounters, innocuous materials, and their embedded cultural associations.
Pre-production involves sculpting face and body coverings (wearables) fashioned from materials available in urban and industrial environments. These serve to enhance, obscure and, at times, restrain the body in provocative ways.
In the available workspace, a stage-set is assembled abstracting situational reality. For example: reflective mylar becomes a distorting mirror, or sheets of translucent paper become the shifting walls of an ephemeral room. Next, select participants perform a series of improvisations both inspired by and using the wearables— allowing their presentation to augment or shift perceived reality. As I document this interaction, I’m capturing the moments which ignite my sense of the extraordinary. This dynamic  process  is seductive; our selves adorned become elements in a non-verbal alphabet: the poetry of the re-imagined and gendered body.
