ARTIST STATEMENT: I have lived and worked in Brooklyn since 1991, and I have watched it change.

I live on 5th Avenue in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and the Williamsburg Bank Tower has always been my anchor. Until recently, it was the lone skyscraper towering over all the other buildings in the skyline. That has changed. Starting in 2013, developers began constructing steel and glass skyscrapers nearby that are almost as tall as the Williamsburg Bank Tower. The construction hasn’t stopped.

Completed in 1927, the Williamsburg Bank Tower is a modernist skyscraper capped with a Rennaissance-style dome. The architects fought against the dome, but the client insisted, making this building what the AIA Guide to New York City called “New York’s most exhuberant phallic symbol.”

I began photographing it in the mid-2000s, simply because I love the building. What began as a project about one building and its surroundings, became a project about time, documenting the changing Brooklyn cityscape.
