Tahir Carl Karmali
Brooklyn, NY
Website: tahirk.com
Neighborhood: Williamsburg

Genre:Portraiture;

ARTIST STATEMENT: I've never felt connected to what people tell me about what my identity as a Kenyan, an African, a Nairobian or a mixed race person should be. My work is about creating my own narratives that I seek solace and understand in my Identity. I like to look toward groups of people and socioeconomic identifiers to help explain my alternative histories from what popular opinion displays about being African. I am a photographer and collage artist that likes to use portraiture to describe the narratives that I am interested in. I often stage portraits with symbols and people to portray their disposition. Collage is a recent addition to my work because I enjoy the idea of cutting histories and pasting them together much like my ancestry.
