ARTIST STATEMENT: “No Land” 'No Land' is a constant battle between man-made structures and artificial landscapes, based on the idea of ownership, compared to the naturally created lands where spirits dance and cheer. The project shows how the industrial revolution has affected our land, flora, and fauna. Abandoned structures of an industrial age are an echo of generations past -- many of these places carry an idea of mass production and creation -- but when pitted against the supreme creator, it is nature which prevails powerfully in its simplicity and perfection. The mask is a representation of the spirit. This transformation of the mask wearer into a spiritual identity relies on practices such as specific types of music and dance. Certain masks represent different spiritual deities in a forest, just as others represent the winds and rains that nurture all life within. With these images I wanted to show how modern society paints a palpable reality inside of walls and buildings, when often there is a natural beauty and an evolution we are not aware of outside, renewing our connection to the lands we call home but with an understanding we can never own them.
