ARTIST STATEMENT: My work is a ploy to coax viewers into looking at the world around them with fresh, queer eyes. By using weaving, felting, net-making, and other anachronisms, I lend some bargaining power to my color palettes and materials. My work manifests in object but also in performance and video: it’s with these forms that my objects and sculpture are activated: their function becomes a little more apparent and their purpose becomes a little more clear, but not too much.
My objects are a series of enigmatic clues and when grouped together, a larger narrative is told: the bolt is nothing without the nut. They are meant to be curious and perplexing. They are queer, but not sexy. They have been unfamiliar and alien, and have the goal of disseminating. I envision my practice of interpretive tutorials, diagrams, and other how-to’s as a way to unlearn.
